Former dentist Jairam Reddy has been appointed chair of South Africa's first National Commission on Higher Education. Reddy will be responsible for the 318 million pounds sterling higher education sector, which includes 21 universities, and 15 technikons, which take almost 500,000 students per year. Reddy's priorities include improving university and student funding; improving science; developing research excellence centres; and developing a university model.

Strains of expansion
Article Abstract:
Statistics published in Aug 1992 show that six of Britain's universities have had budget deficits in the previous two financial years. In 1990-91 86.9% of students leaving university had obtained their degree. The most expensive course is at Sirling University, and the cheapest at Bristol. The London Business School devotes more funding to support services than other colleges.

Golden triangle retains dominance
Article Abstract:
In the 1992 university research ranking Cambridge achieved the highest grade. Others which scored highly were the London School of Economics, Warwick University and the University of Westminster. The rankings were on a five-point grade, five being the highest. Universities achieving grades of two-five will receive part of the 650 million pounds sterling available.
