Rescue bid for flagship course
Article Abstract:
The UK government's task force on foundation degrees, which is chaired by Leeds Metropolitan University vice-chancellor Leslie Wagner, is to meet for the first time to consider ways to make foundation more popular amongst students amid growing evidence that young people prefer traditional three-year honours degrees. Cut-price foundation degrees are one option being considered to make foundation degrees more popular. In the government's white paper for education, it had made it clear that it expected almost all expansion of higher education to come from foundation degrees. The "Higher Education Supply and Demand to 2010" report, which is to be published by the Higher Education Policy Institute, predicts that by 2010 there will be demand for an extra 250,000 degree places, but that many students may reject university altogether if their only option is to settle for a foundation degree.

The lady's not for unfair learning
Article Abstract:
Jane Davidson, education minister of the Welsh Assembly, is profiled in the light of her decision to make Welsh universities wait for a decision on whether they can impose top-up fees. Davidson argues that her decision to delay making an announcement is a result of her desire to fully assess what impact top-up fees would have on the widening of access to higher education.
