Article Abstract:
France's Minister for Equality, Azouz Begag, was more knowledgable than most of his colleagues about causes behind the problems which led to violence in the deprived outer-city suburbs in France in November 2005. Begag has criticised France's Interior Minister for saying that those involved were 'riff-raff' but has been attacked by many on the Left who suggesst that Begag is being used to placate the immigrant community in France and justify policies.
