Shop class as soulcraft
Article Abstract:
A tribute is paid to the work of skilled craftsmen, tracing what is termed 'the degradation of work' throughout the 20th century in the U.S. as educators prepare students to become 'knowledge workers'. It argues that students could benefit from studying the liberal arts and sciences to understand the spirit of craftsmanship. They can learn a manual trade not only as a livelihood, but also to fully engage their human capacities through the intrinsic satisfaction of skilled work.

Why the liberal arts still matter
Article Abstract:
Liberal arts education was originally intended to impart a series of skills for governing to the ruling elite but, in contemporary times, liberal education is being overtaken by the pressures of utilitarian professional training. An argument is presented for the necessity of liberal arts in the original sense, that is, as training for citizenship, even in a modern society transformed by science and technology.
