Shows leave students in debt
Article Abstract:
Students taking creative subjects, such as fashion or film and video, are suffering financial stress in order to fund the end-of-year degree shows that they hope will secure them commissions or jobs. While institutions provide some level of support for the shows - covering the cost of the venue for instance - other extras, such as hiring of models or transporting work, tend to fall on the pockets of the students. Despite the costs, many students believe that the expense is worth it as the shows help them develop professional connections.

Article Abstract:
An examination of the benefits and potential dangers that art students are finding from corporate commissions and sponsorship. It is suggested that such backing gives students much-needed exposure, business skills and income, but there is also the danger that the career of an artist could be ruined if their sponsor suddenly "drops" them and that their work could be limited by the sensibilities of their sponsor.

Article Abstract:
Specialist performing arts colleges in the United Kingdom require financial support if they are to continue their success and maintain their level of exceptional educational standards. It is contended that the high costs of performing arts, combined with the rebalancing of funding by the Higher Education Council for England could cause vice-chancellors to think twice about investments in the discipline.
