Students stitch up Ron
Article Abstract:
The British government has rejected Sir Ron Dearing's proposals to implement blanket charges on full-time education courses after being lobbied by the National Union of Students. It now proposes to means-test students to determine how much of the one thousand pounds sterling tuition fee each student should pay. Contrary to Dearing's recommendations, it will stop providing maintenance grants but promises to prevent higher education establishments from charging students top-up grants. The higher education funding proposals are unpopular with many in parliament.
