Fertile with ideas for the infertile
Article Abstract:
Robert Winston, Professor of Fertility Studies at Hammersmith Hospital, London, UK, believes male pregnancy is feasible in 1999, with a man's body capable of carrying an embryo that had been created in vitro, with the pregnancy maintained by its own hormones. A massive haemorrhage would probably occur, however, when the placenta was removed. Winston is also working on creating babies via a transgenic process, but the success rate in mice has so far been just 2%. Some of Winston's views have been controversial and he is reluctant to make predictions about reproductive techniques.

A woman who knows her mind
Article Abstract:
The brain diseases Alzheimer's and Parkinson's share common factors, according to Royal Institution Director Susan Greenfield, who is also professor of synaptic pharmacology at Oxford University, England. She believes that, in both diseases, there is an aberrant form of brain cell development. She is now working with David Vaux, Martin Westwell and Nick Rawlins to discover and characterize the vital chemical common to the brain cells lost in these diseases.
