Tip the balance back and maintain US influence
Article Abstract:
The director of the Center for International Higher Education at Boston College, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, argues that the US is in the process of losing its position as the preferred destination of scholars and students worldwide and that the Bush administration needs to change its policies if American academe is to retain its dominant place in the global market. It is noted that US academe still has many strengths but that unless changes are made to a number of things, including the Patriot Act and the level of disrespect being shown to those seeking visas, the number of people entering the US academic system will decline, endangering the future of US intellectual and scientific leadership.

Sector seeks cross-party support in US
Article Abstract:
University lobbyists and higher education officials in the United States believe that American universities face, in the best case scenario, four years of stalemate following the re-election of George W. Bush with a Republican majority in the House of Representatives. It is suggested that the Republicans are going to press for universities, which have increased their tuition fees at twice the rate of inflation, to be more financially accountable.
