'UKPd200m to end fee deadlock'

Vice-chancellors in the United Kingdom have put forward a proposal that they believe could end the deadlock between universities and the government over who pays for top-up fee bursaries for students from poor homes. Under the proposals put forward by vice-chancellors, who reject the idea of universities putting a flat-rate third of their fee income towards supporting bursaries for the poorest students, maintenance grants of UKPd1,750 would be offered to all poor students, costing the government an estimated UKPd225 mil. The argument over the top-up fee bursaries is one of the main sticking points in the government's plans to allow universities to charge top-up fees of up to UKPd3,000/yr from 2006.

Fauzia Ahmad is the project manager of the Forum Against Islamophobia and she is carrying out research challenging the stereotypes about Muslim women living in the United Kingdom. According to Ms. Ahmad, oppression of Muslim women in Afghanistan and discussion about the role of women in Muslim societies has placed a larger emphasis on Muslim women in higher education in the United Kingdom. The research provides a case study of a Muslim woman, Sarah Chowdhury, in her first year at Durham University.

Oxford inequalities exposed
Article Abstract:
Differences in the wealth of the colleges that students attend make the Oxford experience a "myth" and serve to undermine the academic performance of students at the poorer colleges, according to the "Report into the Provision of Equitable Standards in a Collegiate University" produced by Oxford University Student Union. The disparities between Oxford's 30 colleges also make it difficult for the university to meet government requirements on access and transparency, the report claims.
