Wake up and get back in the same boat
Article Abstract:
The UK's focus on the European Union since the 1980s has displaced any public interest in the Commonwealth of Nations. However, the designation of 1997 as the UK year of the Commonwealth is seen as the beginning of a revival in its fortunes, with re-awakened political interest. A 1996 Commons' foreign affairs committee has influenced public thinking about the Commonwealth, particularly in the education sector, although funding for higher education links with the Commonwealth is likely to remain restricted. The next government should be prepared to increase funding to educational aid programs.

OECD plans student tests
Article Abstract:
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is seeking ways to compare higher education quality internationally by assessing students produced by each country. Under the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) secondary school students sit two-hour tests intended to gauge knowledge as they approach the end of compulsory education. A parallel test for university undergraduates is believed to be a logical step.
