"Wall of separation": An abused metaphor
Article Abstract:
Thomas Jefferson's phrase describing a "wall of separation between church and state" represents, for many Americans as well as for the judiciary, the meaning of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. However, this phrase does not properly represent the First Amendment's concern with non-establishment and free exercise of religion, and is often associated with nativism and bigotry.
