Watch out, continentals learning to talk the talk
Article Abstract:
Institutions in the UK have a natural advantage in the global higher education market in that they teach in English, which is regarded as the lingua franca of academia, but this advantage may not be enough as universities in continental Europe are beginning to offer English-taught programmes. It is argued that while the UK and Ireland need not worry just yet about competition from universities in southern Europe, where English-taught education is still rare, or from continental Europe, the challenge for students is growing from Dutch and Nordic institutions and UK based institutions should not rest on their laurels if they expect to continue to attract large numbers of foreign students.

It's now or never to bring on Bologna
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the participation of the United Kingdom and UK universities in the development of the European higher education area and the European Research Area are examined. It is argued that is in the UK's interests to be involved in the development of these areas as, if they are successful in their aim of making European universities more competitive internationally, it would be better to be actively involved than isolated in the increasingly competitive global market.

If UK insists on hiding, it could end in 'nul points'
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the contention that the key to success for universities in the United Kingdom lies in the country's commitment to Europe, despite this commitment not being mentioned in the government's latest white paper on higher education, are discussed. It is argued that Europeanisation could result in the transformation of higher education to world-class status by 2010, and that the challenge is to develop a role for the UK at the centre of the European university world.
