Research to be terror checked
Article Abstract:
Scientists in the UK will be expected to assess the possibility of their work being exploited by terrorists under new guidelines issued by the country's leading funders of biomedical research. The guidelines, released by the Medical Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Wellcome Trust, were developed as a result of public concerns that bioscience research could be used by those interested in developing bioweapons.

Fury over Treasury research meddling
Article Abstract:
Academics have reacted with anger to attempts by the Treasury to seize control of their major source of research grants. Under the Treasury's proposals, a "performance management delivery system" will be implemented for the UK's research councils which, academics fear, could leave the councils, which by 2007-2008 will allocate around UKPd3.3 billion to research institutes and universities, at the mercy of political whim.
