Women crack glass ceiling
Article Abstract:
The latest staffing figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency have revealed that more women are winning their fight for promotion in universities in the UK as men are turning their backs on a lecturing career. The figures reveal that more women than men received promotions to professorships in 2002-2003 and that nearly twice as many women as men were promoted to senior lecturer grade, but that the number of men at ordinary lecturer level dropped by 625 in 2002-2003 after falling by 715 in 2001-2002.

Men leave low-status academy to women
Article Abstract:
An analysis of new figures which reveal that the number of male university lecturers is declining while more and more opportunities are opening up for women. It is suggested that the declining economic and social status of academics, combined with ever increasing levels of regulation may be to blame for the fall in the number of male lecturers, but that this is opening up more chances for women to advance.
