Niagara Mohawk Power Corp (NMPC) has implemented a preventive maintenance program to reduce transmission and distribution maintenance costs. NMPC will inspect and repair transmission lines with both ground and helicopter-borne crews while circuits will be inspected and hardware replaced.

Splicing extruded dielectric cable into existing paper/lead cable is much more desirable than completely replacing the paper/lead systems when installing higher-capacity circuits or extending the systems. An explanation of a typical splicing job is presented.

Needed: better guidance on fault-closing performance

Fault-closing standards for switching-gear provide little guidance for the field engineer. A technique for closing into faults is to install fault indicators either on pad-mounted equipment or permanent indicators beneath a window.
