The average consumer electronics purchase for back-to-school 1998 was a high $705, according to a study conducted by the International Mass Retail Association. While only 20% of American parents bought consumer electronics during that period, the likelihood of purchasing was in direct proportion to the age of the children. Also in direct proportion to children's age was the average amount spent on electronics.
