Digital TV preparations loom large for U.S. competitors

The leading Japanese and US audio-video equipment makers are poised to introduce new products centering on digital TV as the US is slated to begin digital TV broadcasts in fall 1998. Sony Corp of Japan plans to develop a wide range of business activities for digital TV, while Matsushita Electric Industrial Company Ltd developed products that reproduce digital TV broadcasts by linking to a set-top converter. On the other hand, RCA/Thomson concentrated on a wide-screen, rear-projection set for high-definition TV.

Matsushita adopts 'first is best' tactic in U.S. digital TV market
Article Abstract:
Matsushita Electric Industrial Company Ltd is one of earliest Japanese TV manufacturers that have forayed into the US digital TV market. The company started shipping its digital TVs in the US months before the debut of terrestrial digital broadcasting in the country. In 1999, Matsushita have several new models lined up for the US market. These digital TVs range from CRT sets to rear-projection TVs and high-definition TVs using plasma display panels.

Hence, the consumer electronics manufacturer has developed a FY2000 marketing program that aims to aggressively market its CD-Rs. Pioneer's CD-R product line includes the PDR-W739 recorder and player and the X-MR7 CD recorder and player minicomponent system.
