Digital cameras click with consumers: sales soar

Statistics released by the Japan Electronic Industry Development Assn reveals a total of 2.322 million units which amount to an increase of 49% in shipment volumes of digital cameras in the first six months of FY 1999. Shipment volumes within Japan was also reported to reach 710,000 units which translates to a 26% rise. Value escalation was also reported which is attributed to the rise in pixel counts and the growth of sophisticated functions.

Digital cameras zoom in on features, functions essential for popularity
Article Abstract:
The total shipment of digital cameras to markets within and outside of Japan is estimated to have reached about 65 billion yen in 1999, an increase of almost 30% compared to figures reported in 1998. The superb performance of the product is attributed to the adoption of sophisticated and advanced features in the cameras. These include the incorporation of CCDs that feature over 2 million pixels and lenses that offer 3x zoom capabilities.

Shutterbug fever pushes digital cameras upward
Article Abstract:
Statistics from the Japan Camera Industry Assn show that the global market for digital cameras has grown by 62% in 1999, posting sales of 3.59 million units. For the year 2000, analysts believe that market for digital cameras could total to more than 8 million cameras worldwide. Favorable prospects for the industry remain because of the continued release of models with more than three million pixels that is appealing to the market.
