Zenith channels TV projects to teams
Article Abstract:
Zenith Electronics Corp has sold a majority of its stock to LG Electronics and has restructured its production development chain in an effort to regain profitability. Despite Zenith's ability to pioneer new features and technologies for consumer television, it has been burdened with annual losses since 1988. In an effort to change the trend Zenith embarked on a restructuring program that included the selling of its non-consumer divisions in 1989 and the streamlining of its product development operations. Zenith enlisted a team of research engineers to examine the manufacturing processes and suggest improvements. Presently, Zenith is enjoying the benefits of LG Electronics' investment in its manufacturing operations and its access to a larger variety of consumer products. Also, product development is now initially reviewed by a product planning committee composed of finance, marketing, engineering and manufacturing members. Once approved, a project is assigned to cross-functional teams.

Good things come in small packages
Article Abstract:
Rapidly developing digital entertainment technologies are enhancing conventional products like television and creating opportunities for new products and services. The market for set-top boxes is expected to triple in in 1997 to between 1.5 million and 3 million units shipped. Set-top boxes with single-chip decoders from Texas Instruments, VLSI Technology and LSI Logic are due to ship in 1997. Set-top boxes will initially enable cable-like services and eventually deliver interactive entertainment, Internet access and video-on-demand. Interactivity is one of the key advantages of digital technology. Texas Instruments is developing next-generation digital signal processors, including a specialized graphics interface chip that supports multiple overlapping graphics widows and high resolution display.
