Name change game: Burndy is now Framatome
Article Abstract:
Framatome Connectors International SA decided to change the name of its US subsidiary from Burndy Corp to Framatome Connectors USA Inc. The change represents an effort to promote global recognition of the parent company, and underline its size in the approximately $20 billion global connector market. In 1994 Framatome was the fourth largest connector supplier worldwide, totaling $550 million in sales. Burndy, acquired in 1989, accounted for $98.9 million of the sales. The move is representative of a recent trend among major European electronics companies which seek to establish stronger customer recognition by renaming US subsidiaries. Industry observers say that name consolidations have become critical in the global economy, particularly for those companies expanding into new markets.

Online system helps Cisco balance supply and demand
Article Abstract:
Cisco Systems has used its supply chain management system to remain nimble as its growth has catapulted ahead. The system enables distributors and contract manufacturers to access incoming orders almost immediately. Under its Single Enterprise Program (SEP), Cisco Systems has continued to outsource its materials management and production to distribution and contract manufacturers as its sales have grown to $4.1 billion in 1996 from $2.2 billion in 1995. The SEP enables distributors and contract manufacturers to respond more quickly, according to the company. Cisco Connect Online, instituted in 1996, enables Cisco's customers to place their orders online and reduces errors that slow down the ordering process.

Revamping their image
Article Abstract:
Independent, or non-franchised, distributors of surplus semiconductor or other components have long projected a semi-legal (gray market) image, partly because they have no authorized reseller agreements with component vendors and partly because they did not give buyers much information about products. However, independent distributors now use Internet sites to offer prospective buyers and sellers information on their products' current open market price and availability, thus letting buyers reassure themselves that they have the best deal.
