Operators of nuclear power plants are finding it hard to compete with other generators in a deregulated environment due to high construction costs. To address this problem, several solutions have been proposed. These include accelerated depreciation, financial restructuring and industry consolidation.

Market sparks merchant plants

A growing number of independent power producers (IPPs) are building merchant plants in anticipation of the deregulation of the electric power industry. IPPs believe that this approach will enable them to remain competitive when deregulation makes electricity a freely traded commodity.
