Onrush of ITS projects speeds entry of fine-performance car navigators
Article Abstract:
Electronics manufacturers are actively competing for the emerging market for car navigation systems, which are anticipated to form the basis of future car multimedia sytems. The market for these equipment, which rely on signals from 24 Global Positioning System satellites, began with the launch of the AVIC-1 from Pioneer Electronic Corp in the early-1990s. As sales for these equipment are expected to rise at least 10% in the Japanese market in 1998, additional features are already being incorporated, including voice-recognition, car-speed sensors, traffic-guidance systems to search less-congested roads, and gyro sensors.

Car navigators find trails into European, U.S. markets
Article Abstract:
The market for car navigation equipment is increasing in Japan, Europe and the US. At first, car navigation equipment sales were few because the equipment were costly and there were not enough supplies of navigation software. There are now sufficient supplies of electronic maps and the systems have become affordable due to the usage of CD-ROM technology. The Japanese market in 1998 amounted to 1.068 million units while combined sales in Europe and North America were from 200,000 to 300,000 units. For 1999, sales are expected to reach 500,000 units.

Onrush of ITS projects speeds entry of fine-performance car navigators
Article Abstract:
Motor vehicle navigation systems have only been available since roughly 1994 but they promise to eliminate problems by motorists in finding locations in a quick, reliable manner. Electronics manufacturers in Japan have been racing to develop advanced performance car navigation systems. Many automobile navigation systems in 1998 offer three-dimensional displays of multiple-level crossings and other structures that are difficult to analyze in two dimensions. Some models can even match workstations in processing power.
