PDP, LCD TVs to stimulate markets, push technology forward
Article Abstract:
The demand for large-screen color plasma display panels (PDPs) is prompted largely by PDP TVs industrial and business applications. The reason for the development is cost. PDP prices of 1 million to 1.5 million yen make PDP cost prohibitive for consumers. The launch of broadcast satellite digital broadcasts prompted demand for large-screen PDP TVs, projection TVs and liquid crystal display TVs. Manufacturers have, therefore, stepped up development and sales of Japanese-specification models as large screens are advantageous for high-definition images.

Output picks up for optical pickups amid strong disc demand
Article Abstract:
Demand for optical pickups has been increasing in unison with the demand for optical media storage products such as CDs and DVDs. To respond to the growing demand, most manufacturers have established offshore production operations, including factories in Southeast Asia and China. Manufacturers project demand for optical pickups to increase from 250 million units in 1998 to between 270 million and 280 million in 1999.
