Rich's Computer Central: Setting Atlanta Computer Market Aflame

Atlanta-based Rich's, a fashion department store, added a sophisticated computer department to its overall computer merchandising scheme. The stores had previous had good volume but elusive profits with computers. They decided to go with a sophisticated department because of the high return on investment. Rich's Computer Central, now in its fourth month, has seen sales rise and has entered 1984 aggressively, planning on putting five per cent of sales revenue into advertising. The Computer Central is in its own glassed-off area, and designed to leave customers at ease. The store has easy credit terms and seventy-five per cent of computer sales have been on credit. Rich's customer base is composed of affluent professionals. The average sale takes from five to ten hours. The Central offers seminars for one hundred dollars.

Consumer Eletronic's 4th Annual Retailer of the Year Awards

Each of Consumer Electronic's Retailer of the Year Awards winners prospered and grew despite the recent recession. Their profiles show that when the going got tough, they got going and when the going got better, they got tougher. The ten winners were Louis Shultz from Jefferson Ward, Bob Koush from Rich's, Robert Gannon from Lowe's, Joe Schirtzonger from Gold Circle Stores, Mark Singer from the Good Guys, Art and Linda Lauer from Arizona Videocassettes, Herman Plant from Platt Music, Philip Ault from Public Phone Stores, Richard Taylor from Programs Unlimited, and Alan Wurtzel from Circuit City.

Audio-Video Partners Finally Exchange Vows in Show Ceremonies

At the 1984 Summer CES the audio industry jumped into mixed- media systems and components. Dealers feel that they will benefit from the audio-video marriage only after stereo TV is accepted by a broad customer base. Prices of compact disc hardware are falling. Photographs of new products are shown.
