Sharp releases IrDA 1.2 low power compliant infrared transceivers
Article Abstract:
Sharp Corp of Japan has introduced two low-power infrared transceivers that comform with the Infrared Data Assn's v.12 Low Power standard. The GP2W0101YP and GP2W0102YP tranceivers operate in voltages ranging from 2.4 V to 5.5 V, have 120 micro-ampere maximum operating currents and cover a maximum communication distance of 20 cm. These features make the new tranceivers ideal for future portable communication devices. The tranceivers were developed using Sharp's advanced optical IC light intercepting element technology and dense assembly technology.

Positioning system locates items within 68m
Article Abstract:
Toshiba Corp has launched in Tokyo, Japan, a positioning information service through its Personal Handy Phone System service. The new service uses multiple base stations and provides positioning accuracy within 68 meters. It is also better than the Global Positioning System since it can work in underground places. The company expects markets for positioning information services to grow to 1 million to 1.5 million terminals in three years.
