Short-term solutions to long-term coal contrat problems
Article Abstract:
Many electric utilities signed long-term contracts with coal suppliers following the OPEC oil embargo of 1973-74 on the assumption that fuel prices would continue to rise. World oil prices fell in the mid-1980s as the demand for clean natural gas began to grow. Coal producers lowered their prices. Many utilities are now paying more than twice as much for coal than the current spot-market national average.
