Softcon Special: Software Industry Strikes Up New Tune for '84
Article Abstract:
The recent Softcon trade show in New Orleans gave a fair indication of trends in the software industry. Home productivity and educational software are becoming more important while entertainment programs are taking on a reduced role. Softcon was dominated by Apple, IBM and Commodore. Many programs for the PCjr and PC compatibles were introduced. Over 200 programs for Apple's Macintosh were on display. There is a tendency towards electronic distribution of software.

Methods of software distribution are changing rapidly. Nationwide distributors account for between twenty-five and forty percent of home computer software sales. Industry observers see a large shakeout among the nationwide distributors. In order for software distributors to survive they should focus on specific market sectors and broaden their product coverage.

The consumer electronics industry has had a reputation in the last years for quality products and reasonable prices. The home computer industry, however, is faced with a crisis of consumer confidence. This problem, together with a lack of well-defined consumer applications has resulted in different marketing.
