Telephones: Cordless Suppliers in '84: Year of Living Dangerously
Article Abstract:
The telephone industry is in the midst of a shakeout. The hardest hit area is cordless. Suppliers are dumping 1.7-49MHz models to make room for the 46-49MHz models scheduled to arrive this summer. Prices for cordless phones have fallen as low as forty-nine dollars, but the industry expects this price level to be short term. At least one major supplier of cordless phones has abandoned the market and others are expected to follow suit. Retailers with large inventories of cordless phones are expected to be the ones who suffer most from the price cutting.

Most agree that the shakeout will be at the low end. Suppliers are now offering complete lines of phones. Most growth this year will be in feature phones.
