Thomson getting back in black
Article Abstract:
Thomson Consumer Electronics (TCE) is not completely out of trouble but the company's overall financial standing has significantly improved. Chief Operating Officer Jim Meyer reported surprisingly healthy sales for the first half of 1998 but warned a slower growth for the next six months of the year despite present tight inventories. The company was able to recover financially through a string of cost-reduction efforts, including the move to close the color TV factory in Bloomington, IN. A one-time $2-billion payment from the French government enabled TCE to pay most of its debts.

Philips expects to star in US
Article Abstract:
Philips Consumer Electronics is addressing its image problem in the US through TV commercials and the launch of cutting-edge branded products. A string of Philips/Magnavox TV spots promoting high-technology products such as Flat TV, DVD, the DVX-8000 A/V, among others, have helped improved the company's name recall to roughly 7%. A new string of TV spots will air in the fall of 1998, but the solution to solving its image problem in the US is the launch of cutting-edge products carrying a Philips/Magnavox label.
