Trash to treasure: reuse sound T&D materials
Article Abstract:
The recycling program of Florida Power Corp. has resulted in significant savings for the utility, where a number of transmission and distribution materials and equipment are regularly maintained or recycled. One of utility's successes includes the recycling of all-aluminum conductor, where the utility recovered some 75,000lb of the conductor in the first year of the program alone. The utility also uses a large industrial cleaner, similar to a bead blaster, which cleans line hardware such as hot-line clamps, stirrups and bolts. The program even extends to concrete and fiberglass poles.
