Underground transmission
Article Abstract:
The installation of underground electrical cables will increase as electric companies become aware of the advantages. Studies of installations of pipe-type, self-contained and extruded transmission cables in Hawaii, New York and Pennsylvania are presented. Cabling problems are addressed.

Customized van speeds infra-red inspections
Article Abstract:
Pacific Gas & Electric Co (PG&E) has equipped a van with an infrared camera and a standard video camera to inspect substations and transmission lines. The van has increased inspection productivity because it can be used all day and night and is not bothered by atmospheric conditions.

Painting extends life of transmission towers
Article Abstract:
Corroded and rusted surfaces of transmission structures can be renewed by painting. The work can be done before protective coatings become ineffective, and little preparation is required. Techniques and paint types are discussed.
