Western Digital aims to succeed outside PC arena; firm wants to expand into high-density drives, semiconductors, boards
Article Abstract:
By Jun 1996 Western Digital, aiming to increase revenue growth in its Semiconductor Microcomputer Products Group, will expand its hard disk drive business into the high-end segment. Western Digital has improved asset management, instituting a disciplined approach to product development, and placed an emphasis on reusable manufacturing designs. The company also sold its LAN business in order to concentrate on its 3.5-in disk drives. Western Digital successfully launched the 3.5-in, 340MB Caviar disk drive in 1992 and the WD24 RocketChip VGA controller for portable PCs in 1993. In 1995 PC disk drive accounted for $1.94 billion of its $2.13 billion revenues. In 1994 the company gained the fourth place in hard disk unit shipments, delivering 8.9 million drives, and is expected to ship 11.7 million in 1995. The company plans to introduce disk drives serving client/server networks and RAID applications.
