Xilinx eyes the big one: consumer
Article Abstract:
Xilinx introduces the XC8100 sea-of-gate antifuse FPGAs, a new family of antifuse-based devices, which the company hopes will become viable for cost-sensitive systems due to their diminished size and high gate routing levels capabilities. The move puts Xilinx in competition against Actel, Crosspoint Solutions and QuickLogic. The XC8100 FPGA offer 1,248 to 8,700 usable gates. The microprocessors are covered by eight patents, packing logic into a small array without routing channels and are programmed using MicroVia antifuse structure. In 1995 Xilinx has been adding to its technologies and product architectures for complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs) and FPGAs. In the near feature the company will add its flash-based CPLDs to its existing EPROM-based products. Xilinx also continues to develop products based on its older SRAM-based FPGAs and the XC5200 series.

When chips become systems, what becomes a chip?
Article Abstract:
Semiconductors are becoming so small that a paradigm shift is underway as to the relationship between chips and systems. Chip companies are expected to yield more control over architectural issues as 'systems on a chip' become more widespread. Though the concept of system on a chip has been around for 20 years with the advent of microcontrollers, it has reached a new level of integration recently with more than a million gates of logic being placed on a chip. Now, chips will not be designed for systems but rather systems will be designed for chips. The microprocessor started the trend and now highly integrated ASICs are being manufactured by companies such as LSI Logic Corp, which is considered a market leader in system-integrated ASICs. Integrated chips basically take functions from a wide range of system chips and place them on a single piece of silicon.

Rockwell eyes personal communications
Article Abstract:
Rockwell International has become a major chip supplier, with semiconductor sales totalling $760 million in 1995. Most of the sales were for modem ICs, although Rockwell's strategy now involves aggressive expansion into wireless and multimedia. To reflect its new focus, Rockwell renamed its chip business Rockwell Semiconductor Systems. In 1997 Rockwell plans to offer ICs and firmware for video phones, and gallium arsenide devices for mobile phones and other devices. Rockwell's focus remains on personal electronics, especially in the area of communications. Rockwell's Wireless Communications Div will offer devices for 1.9GHz Personal Communication Systems and 900MHz cordless telephones.
