A step beyond the envelope house
Article Abstract:
Envelope, double-shelled houses have advantages and disadvantages. Among the former are true passivity of design (no external power required), low auxiliary-heat requirements, higher minimum temperature in the sunspace, with increased glazing without high heat-loss. Among the latter are higher cost, potential fire-hazard in air plenum or loop, floor-to-floor heat stratification of 5-7 degrees, and much window condensation and frosting in winter in northern states.

How to design efficient wood-fired central heating systems: the pros and cons of forced air, hot water baseboard, and radiant floor wood-fired systems are weighed
Article Abstract:
Best system interposes thermal-energy storage between main wood-burning apparatus and forced-air distribution system. Direct-gain passive solar design of low-energy housing in Minnesota-Wisconsin area will save 30% in heating costs and is not difficult to build.
