A useful on-site guide
Article Abstract:
A new On-Site Guide has been published by the Institute of Electrical Engineers and is meant to provide easy reference for smaller projects. It is no substitute for the 16th Edition of the Wiring Regulations although this no longer gives concise instructions on performing electrical installation. Instead this information is now to be supplied in the form of Guidance Notes, the Regulations just covering the basic rules. The Guide emphasises that installers must now provide the customer with good documentation, and lays down new advice about such aspects as earthing, switching and testing.

Plan B might have success
Article Abstract:
The On-Site Guide to the IEE Wiring Regulations is designed to provide answers to practical problems. The Guide proved unwieldy for designing from scratch. It can also be used to find answers to technical problems as they arise in the design process. Using the example of a three pahse 100 A installation in a retail bakery, the Guide provided answers for about half of the problems raised. The Guide is limited and contractors will have to learn its layout. It will not help in complicated applications.

Using the On-Site Guide
Article Abstract:
The On Site Guide to the IEE Wiring Regulations, 16th edition can be used to plan a complete job or to facilitate decision making only in areas of difficulty. The first approach is used for wiring installation in a hypothetical house. The Guide gives useful information but also suggests features which are not in the regulations and some which go beyond the Regulations. On the whole, the Guide was very complicated to use in this way and it is essential that major decisions should be cross checked.
