ASME report ends threaded-fastener controversy
Article Abstract:
A report by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers has concluded that the threaded-fastener gaging method known as System 21 does not guarantee that threaded fasteners comply with dimensional specifications. Entitled 'Screw-Thread Gaging Systems for Determining Conformance to Thread Standards,' the study puts an end to a 20-year controversy over the reliability of System 21 in conforming to dimensional specifications. It was commissioned by the National Institute of Standards and Technology for a neutral and definitive source of information on the gaging system to finally resolve the controversy.

Small job shop specializes in quality data analysis
Article Abstract:
Space Crew decided to skip manual statistical process control (SPC) methods and instead, adopted an automated SPC system to better meet production and quality requirements. The company, which manufactures hydraulic fittings and components for customers in the aerospace industry, chose to use STATnet because of its immediate automated data collection and real-time SPC capabilities. Gains in quality were noted immediately after the system went into operation. This encouraged company operators to continue using and learning more about the system.

Measuring films and foils
Article Abstract:
A proposed device to measure thin films and foil products has been developed by Brunswick Instruments. The stand incorporates a floating anvil surface on a spherical swivel mount and a probe positioned by anarm over the anvil. Results show that the proposed stand is comparatively accurate as properly aligned rigid-anvil devices. The device was designed in response to the difficulties encountered in gaging thin films and foil products.
