Article Abstract:
The first simple, graphical way to set up and run numerous scientific instruments on a microcomputer was LabView (Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench) by National Instruments Corp. The idea for the software package came to the company's president and vice president of research and development, James J. Truchard and Jeffrey L. Kodosky. The basic concept for LabVIEW grew out of a large test system that Truchard developed for the Applied Research Laboratory at the University of Texas in 1979. The product eventually received worldwide acclaim as the first viable 'visual,' or graphical, language for instrumentation. The Apple Macintosh II gave the package a much-needed and significant boost in performance. LabVIEW 2 began shipping in Jan 1990 after a major redesign.

Evaluating nonlinear models for microwave GaAsFETs
Article Abstract:
Choosing the right microwave design software package for modeling microwave GaAsFETs is difficult for several reasons including problems with validity of the model used and the trend toward proprietary models where users cannot get sufficient information on details of the models due to software companies unwilling to share company secrets. Factors for choosing the best software package include deciding which platform will be used and determining how such necessities such as microstripline and associated junction discontinuity are handled. Other important factors include determining which model will be valid under anticipated design conditions, customer support, company reputation and price.
