Analyzing dynamic systems
Article Abstract:
Integrated Systems Inc's $2,495 Xmath mathematical software is an excellent tool for helping engineers analyze dynamic systems. Unlike similar tools, Xmath's X-Windows-based interface uses six major windows. Each window has a specific function: to enter commands and view results, edit individual matrix elements, debug scripts and functions, obtain help from detailed explanations and examples, and list defined variables. Xmath also features different data types and operations on various data types, which include polynomials, matrices, dynamic systems, strings, lists and parameter-dependent matrices. Useful features include its methods for handling operations on various objects and its capability to let the user write scripts and define new user functions. Xmath also has a satisfying interface for plotting data. The program has a number of small bugs and limited internal documentation.

Pen PCs to be sold in multimillions
Article Abstract:
Pen-based microcomputers, notebook-sized devices that allow input with a stylus, are expected to sell in the millions. Pen PCs were first introduced in Jan 1990 by GRiD Systems Corp (Fremont, CA), and in 1991, GRiD and other companies sold about 40,000 units. Companies already in the market include Momenta Corp, MicroSlate Inc, NEC Corp, NCR Corp, Sanyo and Tusk Inc. Apple Computer Inc, IBM, Compaq Computer Corp, Hyundai, Samsung and Toshiba are expected to enter the market by the summer of 1992. NCR Corp offers a 1.8-kg product called the System 3125, which comes with the PenPoint operating system from Go Corp. Tusk Inc sells the 2.7-kg SuperTablet, priced at under $5,000, which is a ruggedized product with 4Mbytes of system memory and a long-life battery. Momenta offers a 2.7-kg device that sells for $4,995. It comes with a 40Mbyte hard drive and 4Mbytes of system memory.
