As R&D penetrates the service sector, researchers must fashion new methods of innovation management
Article Abstract:
The experiences of General Electric Co and Andersen Consulting in applying research and development (R&D) to service industries are discussed. In the past, service industries did not have a clear attitude towards R&D because they thought that new technology can be simply acquired and customized by vendors. In GE's case, it developed a technology to automate the authorization for auto leases for its financial subsidiary. For Andersen Consulting, research has three goals: to create new businesses, to develop new ideas and to tell customers that they are working on future and present solutions.

Skunk works, 1990s-style
Article Abstract:
An increasing number of large high-technology companies are relying on skunk works to keep their competitive edge over smaller and more nimble competitors. Skunk works are small groups of scientists, engineers and other support personnel who develop advanced technological ideas. However, a corporate culture must be appropriate to support a countercultural entity that will make skunk works successful. Top managers must support the skunk works and check its personnel on its day-to-day corporate activities.
