Asiapower 2000: what's next
Article Abstract:
The strategies planned by various East Asian countries for growth in electronics markets through the 1990s are described. New systems and services in Japan will rely increasingly on technological innovations in devices and materials, including optoelectronics and bioelectronic technologies, as well as on software advances. Other important areas of research are human-friendly interfaces and supercomputer-oriented cultural activities, such as virtual realities and interactive art. South Korea's five technical priorities are information technology, robotics, new materials, chemicals and biotechnology. Taiwan's six-year National Construction Plan, begun in 1990, identifies eight key technologies: optoelectronics, software, application of materials, industrial automation, sensors, energy conservation, resource development and biotechnology. The strategies of Singapore, Hong Kong, China and India are also described.

Charles H. Townes: masers, lasers, and more
Article Abstract:
Charles Townes, inventor of both the maser and the laser, continues to pursue new areas of physics when he feels that a particular field is established. Townes' research at AT and T Bell Laboratories and several universities has successively covered such fields as microwave spectroscopy, radio and infrared astronomy and, most recently, spatial interferometry. The changes and taking occasional complete breaks from his work keep the 76-year-old scientist fresh. Townes works long hours, enjoys exchanging ideas with other researchers and finds disagreements are vital to the scientific process. Details of Townes' life and accomplishments are discussed.
