Astro Metallurgical slashes rework by 46%
Article Abstract:
Wooster, OH-based Astro Metallurgical Inc., which designs and fabricates pressure vessels for the petrochemical industry, was able to avoid a shutdown through awareness programs. One of the tools which the company used to facilitate those programs was an automated statistical-process-control (SPC) system. Employees were provided with SPC information regarding rework time on a weekly basis to help them understand the problems and to work toward a solution to these problems. The SPC system has reduced Astro's rework time to 2.5% and customer complaints by 47%.

GE Aircraft Engine cuts gage calibration time by 40%
Article Abstract:
GE Aircraft Engines achieved a 40% reduction in calibration time when it switched from a manual to an automated gaging statistical-process-control system. The company, which manufactures turbine air foils, recognized the benefits of an automated SPC system in 1993. The system was part of its drive toward the Four-Sigma goal, which was designed specifically to collect and track information not only on operations but on employee badge, machine and fixture-station numbers as well.
