Audit software simplifies certification prep
Article Abstract:
Audit softwares could lessen the risk of failure and the time needed in a company's pursuit of ISO 9000 or QS-9000 certifications. SKC Gulf Coast Inc., a Houston, TX, manufacturer of air-sampling products expecting ISO 9000 certification in April 1996, was helped by a series of five certification software programs on CD-ROM developed by Reality Interactive of Eden Prairie, MN. Wynn's-Precision Inc., a Lebanon, TN-based manufacturer of seals and o-rings which previously pursued QS-9000 certification but was awarded ISO 9000 certification as well, was helped by a suite of four certification-software programs developed by Powerway, Inc. of Indianapolis.

Software improves first-time inspection by 10% in six months
Article Abstract:
Frigidaire Co. enhanced the first-time quality of its refrigerators by 10% through its customized Fault Logging Analysis and Graphing System (FLAGS). The defect-tracking system's biggest advantage is its ability to rapidly detect defective parts. It also provides exploded views of specific parts for thorough scrutiny of scratches or leaks before problems are handled on the process line. After six months of FLAGS use, the number of units passing first-time quality inspection increased by 10%.

DOE software solves real-world problems
Article Abstract:
Design of experiments (DOE) software programs make it easy to calculate and analyze numerical data and graphs. DOE software also allows manufacturers to save time, improve productivity and minimize the chance for human error. Emhart Automotive of Mt. Clemens, MI, used DOE software to improve the below-normal Cpk of one of the plastic fasteners it produces. Stahl Specialty Inc., on the other hand, used DOE software to reduce the amount of scrap produced in one of its aluminum-casting jobs.
