CAD: the key to success in aerospace
Article Abstract:
Computer-aided design (CAD) is being used by aerospace companies to compete better in today's aggressive market. BP Chemical's Avonmouth, UK-based Aerospace Composites operations are using 'NASTRAN' and 'NISA' to redesign thrust reverser blocker doors for motors for the Boeing 747 and 767. BP is using MCS's 'Anvil 4000' and 'Anvil 5000' CAD, as well as a 'Lectra' CAM machine to save time and expense. SDRC's 'I-DEAS' integration design and analysis package is being used by Grumman and NASA for the Space Station Freedom project. Lockheed Missiles and Space Company is also employing the package. CAD is proving useful in aircraft electronics. Highly advanced CAD will be required for design of causes of unreliability in future systems.

CAD looks forward to 'real' 3D
Article Abstract:
Future development of computer graphics may provide three dimensional imagery for design engineers. The technology is already in use in energy and defence industries. Three dimensional imagery would allow the design engineer to avoid mistakes by providing a realistic view of a product design. Full virtual reality software packages have not been produced although some software engineers can produce three dimensional animation from two dimensional images.

A solid range of future technologies
Article Abstract:
A large participation expected from engineers at the 2004 Solid Modelling Show with engineering designs depending on CAD, where a large range of future technologies would be presented and exhibited is described. Solid Edge version 15 software, launched by PLM Solutions, which is the first of its kind to support Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services and SQL Server 2000, would be exhibited.
