Deciphering the mechanisms of therapeutic protein production

The rising demand for therapeutic recombinant proteins is driving further research in chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell biology. More R&D efforts are projected in order to enhance production capacity. Researches in CHO cells, as well as the challenges and solutions concerning pharmaceutical companies and medical researchers are presented.

The synthesis of recombinant therapeutic proteins from chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells started in 1987, and since then several biologics have been produced in this cell line. The progression of research in CHO cells is discussed, from its history to current practices to future challenges.
