Article Abstract:
In the design automation industry, Apollo, DEC, H-P, IBM, Silicon Graphics, and Sun are the big six, H-P introduced the Model 9000, a RISC machine capable of 8-MIPS. DEC has based its CAE future on the multi user MicroVax II systems. Silicon Graphics brought out the Iris 4D series, enhanced later by the Iris GT stations now capable of 500 million operations per second. IBM is phasing out the AT, but cloners aren't and applications abound. A new and healthy attitude has emerged among manufacturers toward openness. Most are becoming less proprietary and are licensing their technology. Standards are rapidly being refined, too. CAE is simplifying many mechanical engineers lives by supplying increasingly effective modeling of parts and processes. There is, however, room for improvement.

Article Abstract:
Hardware accelerators and distributed computing are two methods used to increase the power of a workstation while minimizing the expense. Automating the design of integrated circuits has produced better designs in less time. Analog module generators can use design algorithms and rules to generate designs for analog circuits from behavioral descriptions. In extremely complex circuits, test costs can be greater than design costs, and designing for testability is increasingly important. The ability to transfer designs among different software and hardware systems is also becoming increasingly important.

Article Abstract:
The design automation industry experienced movement in 1986 toward open architectures using VMS or Unix operating systems and Ethernet networks. There is now a generally accepted set of software tools for CAE in electronic design, and vendors feel an even larger, more demanding market for mechanical engineering systems exists. Enhanced PC ATs have become popular workstations for many applications, and dedicated workstations are getting faster and more cost-effective due to technological developments.
