EPA proposes HON amendments
Article Abstract:
The EPA has proposed amendments to the Hazardous Organic National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Source Categories (HON). These amendments would apply to facilities that produce industrial organic chemicals or cyclic organic crude intermediates such as benzene, xylene and butadiene. They include a different method for assessing the performance of biological treatment units with multiple mixing zones. They also include provisions for the off-site control of process vent emissions.

EPA issues coordinated air and water rules for the pharmaceutical industry
Article Abstract:
National emissions standards for hazardous air pollutants (NESHAP) and revised water-pollution-control laws for the pharmaceutical industry has been finalized by the EPA. The NESHAP stipulate for a 90 to 99% reduction in the emission of hazardous air pollutants and the implementation of a leak detection and repair program for fugitive emissions. On the other hand, pharmaceutical companies are required to use best conventional pollutant control technology and best available technology for existing direct discharges for controlling water pollution.

EPA amends RCRA regulations
Article Abstract:
The EPA amended Part 264 and Part 265, Subparts AA and BB, stating that the subparts are applicable to recycling units at permitted hazardous waste treatment, storage and disposal facilities (TSDFs) and interim status TSDFs. The agency also clarified that 'permit-as-shield provisions of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act do not apply to Subpart AA regulations. As such, owners and operators that received permits before the regulations became effective should comply with them.
