European standards officials push reform of ISO 9000 and QS-9000 registration
Article Abstract:
European standards officials are planning to reform registration practices associated with management system standards, such as ISO 9000 and QS-9000, to ensure savings for companies. Companies have misinterpreted the quality assurance promoted by the European Union (EU) by considering an ISO 9000 certificate to be synonymous with quality. The EU plans to reeducate industries and public authorities, since a certificate is not essential in many areas. EU standards officials favor development of the International Accreditation Forum to oversee the international standards system.

Registration changes loom in QS-9000's future
Article Abstract:
Major electronics industry suppliers, such as Motorola and Hewlett-Packard, have opposed the changes made in the QS-9000 third party registration scheme by the Big Three automakers. The Big Three have rejected the Supplier Audit Confirmation scheme, which was supported by 39 electronics firms worldwide, including Motorola and Hewlett-Packard. Ford is still holding off on its decision on registration under QS-9000. Despite these oppositions, the Big Three are firm on implementing the QS-9000 scheme as a distinct process for suppliers' base.

EU trends could prove costly to American business
Article Abstract:
Trends involving accreditation practices in Europe could be detrimental to businesses and consumers. One example is the planned merger between the European Accreditation of Certification and the European Co-operation for Accreditation Labs which will create a single body to oversee certification and testing. Some members of the field of standards and testing are also attempting to exclude government and industry from policy setting.
