Expo 92, Seville, Spain
Article Abstract:
The EXPO '92 international exposition, held in Seville, Spain offered US manufacturers the opportunity of comparing high-quality products with their European counterparts, but the quality-negative attitudes of past exposition American exhibitors prevented them from doing so. The previous EXPO '90 American Pavilion commissioner Frederick Bush experienced the reluctance of US corporation chiefs in refusing to be identified as American, because of inferior quality products. Likewise, winners of the Malcolm Baldridge Quality Awards hesitated in giving Bush their support for his 'Quest for Quality' idea due to lack of interest.

West Point and management
Article Abstract:
Neil Postman says in his book 'Technopoly,' that the educational innovations introduced by Sylvanus Thayer at the United States Military Academy in 1817 were the forerunner of modern management. Thayer started the rating of test results with numbers. The method brought competition among students by giving clear indications of success and failure. He also introduced the line and staff system by dividing the academy into two sections with its own hierarchy. Postman, a communications professor at the New York University, further argues that people are engrossed with technology and in effect creating a 'technopoly' society.

A cautionary tale: heavy metal
Article Abstract:
The media have expressed divergent opinions concerning the status of the US economy. Investment manager James J. Cramer claims that US industry is competitive in world-wide markets and that stock market activity heralds a new era of US industrial strength. However, the data he uses to support this are scant and his conclusions have been widely disputed. The prophets of prosperity simply do not have the statistics to back up their claims.
