Fieldbus: not ready for prime time
Article Abstract:
Chemical process industries in Europe remain skeptical of the claim that fieldbus technology has matured sufficiently to enable the control of entire plants. According to BASF AG Control System Mgr Werner Setzwein, while digital fieldbus control systems and field devices can cut 2%-3% from the total capital costs of a greenfield project, much remains to be learned before they can gain widespread acceptance. Peperl+Fuchs GmbH CEO Werner Kegel also pointed out that many advantages promised by fieldbus technology can already be accomplished using remote I/O systems.

Pressure vessel maintenance
Article Abstract:
Pressure vessels can be inspected and maintained optimally by following certain steps. The degradation mechanisms and failure modes of pressure vessels should be determined first. This should be followed by considering the consequences of failure and the probability of failure. Economic and SHE risks are then assessed. An optimal purchase, inspection and maintenance plan should then be developed. The plan will consider tradeoffs between initial purchase cost and operating costs as well as the scenario with the lowest overall cost.
