GD&T training programs: GD&T training in the classroom emphasizes skill-oriented training and ignores problem-solving abilities

Article Abstract:

Computer aided drafting and design, geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), dual dimensioning and metrics have presented the study of drafting with challenges to adapt to new techniques, concepts and standards. Many training programs have responded with new equipment and curricula, but few have addressed specifically the new standards and orientation required by GD&T. Thus, new graduates often cannot read GD&T industry-standard engineering drawings. Short, focussed in-house training sessions offered over several weeks are more effective than crash courses.

Are your tolerances too tight? Most plus and minus only drawings are seriously flawed - they cannot optimize both tolerance level and function

Article Abstract:

The geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) system allows greater tolerances, clearly defines most functional part relationships and facilitates design information flow with a comprehensive view of functional tolerance specifications which is missing from the usual 'plus and minus only' specifications. GD&T is not just a drafting frill, but gives information about function independent of particular production technique. This focus on function gives everyone involved in the design a bigger picture and facilitates necessary changes.

Using users to optimize software

Article Abstract:

The Manufacturing Quality Assurance Cooperative is a team of quality executives formed by IQS Pres. John Cachat. They are working together to develop automated quality programs. The cooperative was formed to share the costs and risks among 200 companies. Its members come from 18 states and their products include steel drums to chemicals to medical instruments.
